Decoding Alcatel Speedtouch Home Product Codes

I you are considering purchasing an Alcatel Speedtouch Home modem, or just want to understand the modem you have better, you can determine its capabilties by decoding the product code on the bottom of the modem. The product code should look something like:

3EC18?????AA

All product codes should start with "3EC18" and end with "AA"...the stuff in the middle can be decoded as follows:

3EC18XYZSHAA

3EC18 - Standard Prefix
X - Model Type
Y - Modem Type
Z - LAN Interface Type
S - Software Functionality
H - Hardware Platform
AA - Standard Suffix

Model Types - X field:

X AC/DC Plug Type Wire A/B Splitter Power
2 110V/9V US 2/5 -
3 220V/12V ROW 1/2 5/6
4 220V/12V UK&Sing 1/2 5/6
5 220V/9V UK/Sing 3/4 -
6 220V/9V ROW 3/4 -
7 220V/9V AUS 3/4 -
8 110V/9V US 3/4 -
9 220V/9V Korea 3/4 -

Note: "2/5" means ADSL signal must be connected to pins 2&5 (the outside pair) of the RJ-11 jack
"3/4" means pins 3&4 (the inside pair) of the RJ-11 jack.

This is the most common problem when people try to convert from one modem type to another. Most non-Alcatel modems require signal on pins 3/4, where as most of the Alcatel modems delivered in the US require pins 2/5. Make sure you re-wire your phone jack as appropriate.

Modem Type - Y field:

Y Modem type
0 Full rate, G.dmt, ANSI T1.413 only, POTS overlay
1 G.Lite only, POTS overlay
2 Full Rate (ETSI), ISDN Overlay
3 Multimodem (FR, G.Lite, ANSI)

Note: Type "0" is the only one compatible with most US ADSL providers. Note also that some ADSL providers may require "CAP" encoding which is NOT compatible with "DMT" based modems.

LAN Interface Type - Z field:

Z LAN Interface
4 10Base-T interface (half-duplex)
5 ATMF-25 & 10BaseT interface

Unless you have and ATM interface card in your PC, you want type "4". However, I assume that type "5" would also work since it has both.

Software Functionality - S field:

S Default Software Package
B Bridging + PPTP *
C Bridging + PPTP * + Routing

Note: What Alcatel calls "PPTP" really means that the modem can talk PPP over ATM (PPPoA) to the ISP and user can talk to the modem using Microsoft's Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol client.

Hardware Platform - H field:

H Hardware Platform
C R3.2 (3MB FLASH/ADNTF)
E R3.2 (Korea, withouth Power Supply)
