Here are the procedures for capturing a packet trace with NetXray and emailing it to me for analysis:
NOTE: This version of NetXray ONLY works with Windows 95/98/ME...it definitely does NOT work with WinNT, and Win2K.
(If you have WinNT and/or Win2k and want to submit a trace you'll need: Ethereal )
1) Download and install
2) Launch NetXray
If you are a bridged/DHCP customer OR PPPoE, then select the Ethernet device that your ADSL connection is using. If you are a PPPoA customer, then select the dialup adapter associated with your PPPoA connection. Note: There will likely be TWO 'dialup adapters', try both until you find the one that allows you to capture traffic.
3) Shut down all background processes
This analyzer will capture ALL packets leaving and entering your system. Be sure to shut down any sensitive applications as they may periodically send your passwords. Basically, shut down your mail program otherwise, if your mail program kicks off while your tracing, you're going to end up sending me your email password in the trace file. Believe me, I don't want to read your email, I get enough already.
4) Prepare to capture
The key to using a protocol analyzer is capturing the least number of packets that encompases the problem. Whatever program, transaction, speedtest, etc. that you are having a problem with...get it set up just to the point before you are ready to execute it.
5) Select Capture Start on the NetXray menu bar
6) Perform the transaction you want to monitor
7) Select Capture End and View on the NetXray menu
8) Select File Save As
For a file name choose: name.enc
Where 'name' is your name.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you use '.enc' as the file extension. This forces the trace to be saved in Network General Sniffer format...this allows me to read the trace into one of my full blown ($15,000) protocol analyzers--making analysis much easier and more exhaustive.
Ethereal users: Save traces "Network Associates DOS format" or it might say "Sniffer DOS" format...I don't remember exactly, but it has "DOS" in the name as the real Sniffer runs on a DOS platform. Please also give the file a .enc extension so I know what format you're using.
9) Email me trace file to:
Please include a description of what you where doing and what YOU experience when your run your transaction. For example, I'm trying to load the home page "www.xyz.com"...my browser hangs for 5-10 seconds before finally being displayed.
