Remote access trojans (rats) provide similar functionality as commercial remote control products, but with added features specifically for system hacking and automated propagation. Basically, rats allow a remote users to gain complete control of your system: perform screen captures, transfer/delete files, capture keystrokes, reboot your PC, etc. Being infected with a rat is the Unix equivalent of being 'rooted'.

Many rats also include high speed port scanning tools and some even attempt to propagate themselves to other systems using worm-like tactics.
