Did a Pop-up Message Just Appear on Your Screen?

One of two things should have just happened:

  • No Message appeared. That's Good! That means you either have the Windows Messenger service disabled or you have a firewall or router which is properly preventing remote users from accessing it.

  • A WinPopUP message like this appeared:

That's bad. That means your system seems to have the Windows Messenger service enabled and it is accessible by anyone on the Internet.

Why Should You Care?

Although receipt of WinPopUPs is annoying, the bigger issue is that your system may be vulnerable to more serious security exploits (ie, full unauthorized access to your hard drive).
