WallWatcher logging setup
Note: WallWatcher works with Windows 98, Windows NT, and
later versions of Windows. If you are using Windows 95, please
see the section on Linksys
via Kiwi instead. The following steps enable full logging
of a Linksys Cable/DSL Router and anonymized reporting by
myNetWatchman
The basic steps are as follows; details are shown below:
- Download and install the WallWatcher firewall log receiver
and analysis tool
- Configure WallWatcher to create the log for mNW.
- Configure your router to send log entries to the computer
running WallWatcher.
- If you are running a software firewall, configure it to
let WallWatcher accept the log entries from your router.
- Configure mNW to use the WallWatcher log (WWmNW.log).
Step 1: Download and install the WallWatcher firewall
log viewer and analysis tool for Linksys routers.
- Download WALLWATCHER.ZIP and WWOCX.ZIP from http://www.wallwatcher.com
to the computer that will be running mNW.
- Create a new folder on your hard drive for WW, and unzip
the two files above into that folder.
- In the new folder, run SETUP.EXE. (If it won't run, obtain
Microsoft file MSVBVM50.DLL by downloading and running the
microsoft file here.
- When running SETUP, select any other options you want,
then click "Install". You may need to click "Install"
more than once if some options don't work the first time.
- Run WALLWATCHER.EXE.
- For further information refer to Readme.txt in the WW
folder, or run WWHELP.CHM in the WW folder.
Step 2: Configure WallWatcher to create the log for
mNW.
- In WW, go to Options and then Special. Select "I'm
using myNetWatchman". Click "OK".
Step 3: Configure your router/firewall to send log
entries to the computer running WW.
- In your web browser enter 192.168.1.1 (normally the IP
address for Linksys routers) in the address box. The configuration
panels for the router/firewall will appear.
- Enter your password.
- Select the "Log" tab (between "DHCP"
and "Security").
- Set "Access Log" to be enabled.
- Send Log to: 192.168.1.XXX where XXX is either the IP
address of the computer running mNW or 255. (255 sends to
all local computers. Use 255 if the local IP addresses are
being assigned by DHCP, or if more than one computer will
be
logging.)
Step 4: If you are running a software firewall, configure
it to let WallWatcher accept the log entries from your router.
- If you are running a software firewall you will probably
be prompted by an alert either saying that WallWatcher wants
to act as a server, or that a computer at 192.168.1.1 is
trying to access your computer. Respond by granting WallWatcher
permission to accept incoming data from 192.168.1.1 on local
UDP port 162.
- After several minutes you should see WallWatcher beginning
to log events from the router/firewall.
Step 5: Configure mNW to use the WallWatcher log
(WWmNW.log).
- Right click on the mNW icon in the tray in the lower
right of the monitor and select Configure.
- Enter the email address and password you registered on
mNW with.
- Click the "Log File" button and navigate to
the WW log file for mNW. It will be located in the folder
where you installed WW, and it will be called WWmNW.log.
- Click the drop down list for "Log File Format"
and select WallWatcher.
- Select "Run myNetWatchman client at startup".
- Click OK.
After several minutes, if you right click on the
mNW icon in the tray and select status, you should see the
mNW agent successfully uploading events.
